It appeared in Crete during the Italian period and had a round body. This round body type is played in other parts of Greece as well (e.g. Corfu) because it has a sharper and fairer sound.

It is made from mulberry, pear, maple and cypress wood. Technically speaking, it differs from the other instruments due to the way it is designed.
