The lyra has been the dominating musical instrument in the Cretan Music Tradition, particularly over the past 50 years. There are four types: the lyraki (small lyra), lyra, vrontolyra and viololyra.
The body is made from mulberry wood and the top from 300-400 year-old cedar wood. The wood was found in the wood beams of old houses. They were finished off with varnish, whose composure is kept a secret. Pear, walnut and maple wood is also used.
A main characteristic of the lyra is the unblemished and dry wood which is chosen for the best result.
The classic Cretan lyra is an irreplaceable musical instrument for Cretans even today and is extremely popular. Cretans have fun most when listening to its sound!
